How do weight loss medications differ?

There are currently four main prescription weight loss medications available in the UK: Wegovy (semaglutide), Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Saxenda (liraglutide), and Orlistat (also known by the brand name Xenical). Wegovy and Saxenda are both injectable medications that work by mimicking gut hormones to reduce appetite and slow digestion, helping you feel fuller for longer. Mounjaro works in a similar way but targets two hormone receptors rather than one, making it one of the most effective options currently available. Orlistat is a capsule taken with meals that works differently — it prevents around a third of the fat you eat from being absorbed by the body. All four are prescription-only medicines, meaning they can only be supplied following a clinical assessment to confirm they are appropriate for you.

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Clinical trial results vary by medication, but the evidence is significant. Mounjaro has shown the most impressive results to date, with some trial participants losing over 20% of their body weight over 72 weeks. Wegovy trials demonstrated average weight loss of around 15% of body weight over 68 weeks. Saxenda produced average losses of around 8% over 56 weeks in clinical studies.
