Description

What is Saxenda?

Saxenda is a brand-name prescription medication containing liraglutide, used primarily for chronic weight management in adults who are obese or overweight with at least one weight-related health condition. It belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. Saxenda works by mimicking a natural hormone in the body that regulates appetite and food intake, helping patients feel fuller for longer and reducing overall calorie consumption. It is administered as a once-daily injection and has been shown in clinical trials to produce significant weight loss when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

How Does Saxenda Work?

Saxenda works by activating the GLP-1 receptors in the brain and body, which play a key role in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. The active ingredient liraglutide mimics the natural GLP-1 hormone, which is released after eating. By activating these receptors, Saxenda slows the rate at which food leaves the stomach, reduces appetite and food cravings, lowers blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release, and reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver. This combination of effects helps patients feel fuller for longer, consume fewer calories, and achieve sustained weight loss over time. Unlike Wegovy and Mounjaro, Saxenda is administered daily rather than weekly.

Warnings

Do not use if you:

  • Are allergic to liraglutide or any of the other ingredients in Saxenda.
  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer).
  • Have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding — Saxenda is not recommended during pregnancy as weight loss may harm an unborn baby.

Consult a doctor before use if you:

  • Have a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, or kidney disease.
  • Are taking other medications for diabetes, as Saxenda may increase the risk of low blood sugar when combined with insulin or similar treatments.
  • Have or are at risk of developing depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts.
  • Have a history of heart problems, as your healthcare provider will need to assess whether Saxenda is appropriate for you.

Discontinue use and seek medical attention if:

  • You experience severe or persistent stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting, which may be signs of pancreatitis.
  • You notice a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing, which may indicate a thyroid problem.
  • You experience symptoms of low blood sugar such as dizziness, confusion, sweating, or fainting.
  • You develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Keep out of reach of children: Saxenda is a prescription medication and must only be used by the person for whom it has been prescribed.

Not for use in children or adolescents: Saxenda is not approved for use in individuals under 18 years of age and has not been studied in this age group.

Directions

Dosage:

Saxenda is administered as a once-daily injection, starting at a low dose of 0.6mg and gradually increasing over five weeks until reaching the recommended maintenance dose of 3mg. This slow escalation allows your body to adjust comfortably and helps minimise side effects.

Administration:

Inject Saxenda under the skin (subcutaneous injection) in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate your injection site with each dose to avoid skin irritation or soreness. Your healthcare provider will show you how to self-administer the pen correctly and safely.

Take with or without food:

Saxenda can be taken at any time of day, regardless of meals. For the best results, it should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity as part of a wider weight management programme.

Do not exceed the prescribed dose:

Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember — unless your next dose is due within 12 hours, in which case skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Never take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed one.

Store properly:

Keep Saxenda in the refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) until you are ready to use it. Once in use, the pen can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) or in the refrigerator for up to 30 days. Always keep the cap on when not in use and never freeze it.

Ingredients

Active Ingredient:

  • Liraglutide (6mg/ml): A GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a natural hormone to regulate appetite, slow digestion, and help reduce overall food intake.

Inactive Ingredients:

  • Disodium phosphate dihydrate
  • Propylene glycol
  • Phenol
  • Water for injections
  • Hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment)

These ingredients work together to ensure the stability, sterility, and effective delivery of Liraglutide with every dose.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  1. Nausea: Frequently reported, particularly during the first few weeks as your body adjusts to the medication.
  2. Diarrhoea or constipation: Some digestive discomfort is normal when starting Saxenda and usually settles with time.
  3. Vomiting: May occur as your appetite decreases and your eating habits begin to change.

Less Common but Serious Side Effects:

  1. Pancreatitis: Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting — stop taking Saxenda and seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
  2. Gallbladder problems: Saxenda may increase the risk of gallstones, which can cause pain in the upper right abdomen or shoulder.
  3. Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia): More likely when Saxenda is used alongside other diabetes medications such as insulin or sulphonylureas.

Rare Side Effects:

  1. Kidney problems: Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, which may affect kidney function — contact your doctor if you notice reduced urine output or swelling in your hands or feet.
  2. Thyroid tumours: Saxenda has been associated with thyroid tumours in rare cases — report any neck swelling, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing to your doctor promptly.
  3. Mood changes: Report any changes in mood, feelings of depression, or thoughts of self-harm to your healthcare provider immediately.
