How Does Norethisterone Work?

When used to treat heavy or painful periods, Norethisterone helps to stabilise the uterine lining and reduce the amount of bleeding. When used to treat endometriosis, Norethisterone suppresses the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus. When used as a contraceptive, Norethisterone works by thickening cervical mucus, inhibiting ovulation, and altering the uterine lining.

The drug is not a contraceptive.

Warnings

  • Do not use Norethisterone if you are allergic to norethisterone or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use Norethisterone if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
  • Do not use Norethisterone if you have a history of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), heart attack, or stroke.
  • Do not use Norethisterone if you have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, severe liver disease, or a history of liver tumours.
  • Do not use Norethisterone if you have or have had breast cancer or any other hormone-sensitive cancer.
  • Norethisterone may increase the risk of blood clots. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as sudden leg pain or swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
  • You must inform your doctor about any prescription medications you are taking before using Norethisterone, particularly epilepsy medications, rifampicin, or HIV medications, as these may affect the effectiveness of the medication.
  • Norethisterone is not recommended for use while breastfeeding without first consulting your doctor.
  • Do not use Norethisterone as a regular method of contraception without consulting your doctor, as it is not specifically licensed for this purpose in the UK.
  • Women with a history of depression, migraines, diabetes, or high blood pressure should consult their doctor before using Norethisterone.
