Microgynon 30 is an oral contraception pill. Compared to most contraceptives, the tablet contains fewer estrogen levels. The Microgynon ED has the same properties but comes in a 28-day pack. You take one pill daily. The last seven tablets don't contain hormones. They help you keep the routine, so you don't forget to take the pills at the beginning of each menstruation cycle.

What is Microgynon?

Microgynon is a brand-name prescription combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) containing two synthetic hormones, ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. It is used primarily to prevent pregnancy and is one of the most widely prescribed contraceptive pills in the UK. Microgynon belongs to a class of medications called combined oral contraceptives, which work by using a combination of oestrogen and progestogen hormones to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and alter the lining of the uterus to prevent pregnancy. When taken correctly, Microgynon is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It may also be prescribed to help regulate periods, reduce period pain, and manage symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

How Does Microgynon Work?

Microgynon works through three complementary mechanisms to prevent pregnancy. Firstly, the combination of ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel suppresses ovulation by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. Secondly, levonorgestrel thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix and reach an egg. Thirdly, the hormones alter the lining of the uterus (endometrium), making it less receptive to the implantation of a fertilised egg. Together, these three mechanisms provide highly effective contraceptive protection when the pill is taken correctly and consistently.

Warnings

  • Do not use Microgynon if you are allergic to ethinylestradiol, levonorgestrel, or any of its ingredients.
  • Microgynon should not be used by women who smoke and are over 35 years of age, as this significantly increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects such as blood clots, heart attack, and stroke.
  • Do not use Microgynon if you have a history of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), heart attack, or stroke.
  • Do not use Microgynon if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe migraines with aura, or certain liver conditions.
  • Microgynon may increase the risk of blood clots (venous thromboembolism). Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as sudden leg pain or swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
  • You must inform your doctor about any prescription medications you are taking before using Microgynon, particularly epilepsy medications, rifampicin, or HIV medications, as these may reduce the effectiveness of the pill.
  • Microgynon does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
  • Regular blood pressure checks and cervical smear tests are recommended for women taking Microgynon long term.
  • Microgynon is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

How to use:

  • Take one tablet daily at the same time each day for 21 consecutive days.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water, with or without food.
  • After completing the 21-day strip, take a 7-day pill-free break during which a withdrawal bleed will typically occur.
  • Start a new strip of pills after the 7-day break, even if the withdrawal bleed has not finished.
  • If starting Microgynon on the first day of your period, it is effective immediately. If starting at any other time, use additional contraceptive precautions for the first 7 days.
  • If you miss a pill, refer to the patient information leaflet or consult your doctor for guidance.
