What is Levonelle 1.5mg?

Levonelle 1.5mg is a brand-name emergency contraceptive tablet containing levonorgestrel, commonly known as the morning after pill. It is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure and is available both over the counter without a prescription and on prescription. Levonelle belongs to a class of medications called progestogen-only emergency contraceptives. It is intended for use as an emergency measure only and should not be used as a regular method of contraception. When taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sexual intercourse, Levonelle is highly effective at preventing pregnancy, with its effectiveness being greatest when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex.

How Does Levonelle Work?

Levonelle works primarily by delaying or inhibiting ovulation, preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. If taken before ovulation has occurred, Levonelle can prevent the release of an egg, thereby preventing fertilisation. Levonelle may also work by thickening the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg, and by altering the lining of the uterus (endometrium), which may reduce the likelihood of implantation of a fertilised egg. Levonelle does not terminate an existing pregnancy and will not work if a fertilised egg has already implanted in the uterus. Its effectiveness decreases with time, so it should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse.

Warnings

  • Do not use Levonelle if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of its ingredients.
  • Levonelle is not intended for use as a regular method of contraception and should only be used in emergency situations.
  • Levonelle may be less effective in women who weigh more than 70kg or have a BMI over 26. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about alternative emergency contraceptive options.
  • Do not use Levonelle if you are already pregnant, as it will not terminate an existing pregnancy.
  • You must inform your doctor or pharmacist about any prescription medications you are taking before using Levonelle, particularly epilepsy medications, rifampicin, HIV medications, or St John's Wort, as these may reduce the effectiveness of Levonelle.
  • Levonelle may cause changes to your menstrual cycle. If your next period is more than 5 days late or is unusually light, take a pregnancy test.
  • Levonelle does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
  • If you vomit within 2 hours of taking Levonelle, contact your doctor or pharmacist as you may need to take another tablet.
  • Levonelle is not recommended for use by girls under 16 years of age without medical supervision.
  • Seek medical advice if you experience severe lower abdominal pain after taking Levonelle, as this may indicate an ectopic pregnancy.

How to use:

  • Take one 1.5mg tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse, ideally within 24 hours and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water, with or without food.
  • If you vomit within 2 hours of taking the tablet, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately as you may need to take another tablet.
  • If you are taking a regular contraceptive pill, continue taking it as normal after taking Levonelle and use additional contraceptive precautions such as condoms for the next 7 days.
  • Take a pregnancy test if your next period is more than 5 days late or is unusually light.
