Evra is a brand-name prescription combined hormonal contraceptive patch containing two synthetic hormones, ethinylestradiol and norelgestromin. It is used primarily to prevent pregnancy and offers an alternative to the combined oral contraceptive pill for women who prefer not to take a daily tablet. Evra belongs to a class of medications called combined hormonal contraceptives, which work by using a combination of oestrogen and progestogen hormones to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and alter the lining of the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The patch is applied directly to the skin and delivers a continuous dose of hormones through the skin and into the bloodstream. When used correctly, Evra is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

How Does Evra Contraceptive Patch Work?

Evra works through three complementary mechanisms to prevent pregnancy. Firstly, the combination of ethinylestradiol and norelgestromin suppresses ovulation by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. Secondly, norelgestromin thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix and reach an egg. Thirdly, the hormones alter the lining of the uterus (endometrium), making it less receptive to the implantation of a fertilised egg. The patch delivers hormones transdermally, meaning they are absorbed through the skin and directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system and providing a consistent and continuous dose of hormones throughout the week.

Warnings

  • Do not use Evra if you are allergic to ethinylestradiol, norelgestromin, or any of its ingredients.
  • Evra should not be used by women who smoke and are over 35 years of age, as this significantly increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects such as blood clots, heart attack, and stroke.
  • Do not use Evra if you have a history of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), heart attack, or stroke.
  • Do not use Evra if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe migraines with aura, or certain liver conditions.
  • Evra may increase the risk of blood clots (venous thromboembolism). Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as sudden leg pain or swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
  • Evra may be less effective in women who weigh more than 90kg. Consult your doctor if this applies to you.
  • You must inform your doctor about any prescription medications you are taking before using Evra, particularly epilepsy medications, rifampicin, or HIV medications, as these may reduce the effectiveness of the patch.
  • Evra does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
  • Evra is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Do not apply Evra to the breasts or to skin that is red, irritated, or broken.

How to use:

  • Apply one patch to clean, dry, unbroken skin on the buttocks, abdomen, upper arm, or upper back.
  • Wear each patch for 7 days before replacing it with a new patch on the same day of the week.
  • After wearing three consecutive patches over 3 weeks, remove the patch and have a 7-day patch-free break during which a withdrawal bleed will typically occur.
  • Apply a new patch after the 7-day break, even if the withdrawal bleed has not finished.
  • Rotate the application site with each new patch to reduce the risk of skin irritation.
  • Press firmly on the patch for 10 seconds when applying to ensure it is securely attached.
  • Fold used patches in half with the sticky sides together and dispose of them carefully in household waste. Do not flush patches down the toilet.
