What is Desogestrel 75mcg?

Desogestrel 75mcg is a prescription progestogen-only contraceptive pill (POP), commonly referred to as the mini pill. Unlike combined oral contraceptives such as Microgynon, which contain both oestrogen and progestogen, Desogestrel contains only a progestogen hormone and is therefore suitable for women who cannot or prefer not to take oestrogen-containing contraceptives. Desogestrel is used primarily to prevent pregnancy and is particularly suitable for women who are breastfeeding, smokers over the age of 35, or those with a history of migraines, high blood pressure, or blood clots who cannot use combined hormonal contraceptives. When taken correctly, Desogestrel is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

How Does Desogestrel Work?

Desogestrel works primarily by inhibiting ovulation, preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. This distinguishes it from older progestogen-only pills, which primarily worked by thickening cervical mucus rather than suppressing ovulation. Desogestrel also thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervix and reach an egg, and alters the lining of the uterus (endometrium), making it less receptive to the implantation of a fertilised egg. The combination of these three mechanisms provides highly effective contraceptive protection when the pill is taken correctly and consistently.

Warnings

  • Do not use Desogestrel if you are allergic to desogestrel or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use Desogestrel if you have or have had breast cancer or any other hormone-sensitive cancer.
  • Do not use Desogestrel if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding that has not been investigated by a doctor.
  • Do not use Desogestrel if you have severe liver disease or a history of liver tumours.
  • You must inform your doctor about any prescription medications you are taking before using Desogestrel, particularly epilepsy medications, rifampicin, or HIV medications, as these may reduce the effectiveness of the pill.
  • Desogestrel may slightly increase the risk of blood clots, although this risk is lower than with combined oral contraceptives. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as sudden leg pain or swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
  • Desogestrel may cause irregular bleeding or changes to your menstrual cycle. Consult your doctor if you experience any unusual or prolonged bleeding.
  • Desogestrel does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
  • Desogestrel is not recommended for use during pregnancy. If you think you may be pregnant, consult your doctor immediately.
  • Women with a history of ectopic pregnancy or fallopian tube problems should consult their doctor before using Desogestrel.

How to use:

  • Take one tablet daily at the same time each day without a break between strips.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water, with or without food.
  • Start a new strip of pills immediately after finishing the previous one, with no pill-free break.
  • If starting Desogestrel on the first day of your period, it is effective immediately. If starting at any other time, use additional contraceptive precautions for the first 48 hours.
  • If you miss a pill by more than 12 hours, use additional contraceptive precautions for the next 48 hours and refer to the patient information leaflet or consult your doctor for guidance.
  • Take Desogestrel at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels of the medication in your body and to reduce the risk of missing the 12-hour window.
