What is Clotrimazole 1% Cream?

Clotrimazole 1% Cream is an over-the-counter antifungal medication used primarily to treat a wide range of fungal skin infections. It belongs to a class of drugs called azole antifungals. Clotrimazole 1% Cream is used to treat conditions including athlete's foot (tinea pedis), ringworm (tinea corporis), jock itch (tinea cruris), fungal nappy rash, and other fungal skin infections caused by dermatophytes and yeasts such as Candida. It is applied directly to the affected area of the skin and is suitable for use on adults and children. Clotrimazole 1% Cream is one of the most widely used and clinically proven topical antifungal treatments available and is effective against a broad spectrum of fungi and yeasts.

How Does Clotrimazole Work?

Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, which is an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. By disrupting the production of ergosterol, Clotrimazole causes the fungal cell membrane to become permeable and unstable, leading to the death of the fungal cells. This antifungal action is effective against a broad spectrum of fungi and yeasts including dermatophytes, Candida species, and Malassezia. Clotrimazole 1% Cream is applied topically to the affected area of the skin, allowing the active ingredient to work directly at the site of infection without significant absorption into the bloodstream.

Warnings

  • Do not use Clotrimazole 1% Cream if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any of its ingredients.
  • Clotrimazole 1% Cream is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
  • Do not use Clotrimazole 1% Cream on broken or severely irritated skin without first consulting your doctor.
  • If your symptoms do not improve after 4 weeks of treatment, consult your doctor as you may require a different treatment or further investigation.
  • Clotrimazole 1% Cream contains cetostearyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol which may cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis.
  • Do not use occlusive dressings over Clotrimazole 1% Cream unless directed by your doctor.
  • Consult your doctor before using Clotrimazole 1% Cream during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Keep Clotrimazole 1% Cream away from the eyes and do not use near naked flames.

How to use:

  • Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying Clotrimazole 1% Cream.
  • Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area and the surrounding skin 2 to 3 times daily.
  • Gently rub the cream into the skin until fully absorbed.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after applying the cream, unless the hands are the area being treated.
  • Continue using Clotrimazole 1% Cream for the full recommended duration of treatment, even if symptoms improve before the course is finished.
  • For athlete's foot, pay particular attention to the spaces between the toes and ensure the feet are kept clean and dry.
  • The duration of the treatment depends upon the type of infection. Use the cream for at least two weeks for candida infections or at least one month for other infections.
  • If you have athlete's foot, it may help to use an antifungal dusting powder as well. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to recommend one.
  • The symptoms of skin infection such as itching or soreness should improve within a few days of treatment although signs such as redness and scaling may take longer to disappear. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
