Description

What is Doxycycline?

Doxycycline is a prescription antibiotic medication belonging to the tetracycline class of antibiotics. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including acne vulgaris, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, Lyme disease, malaria prevention, and certain skin infections. Doxycycline works by inhibiting the growth and spread of bacteria responsible for causing these infections. It is one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics in the world and is valued for its broad spectrum of activity against a wide range of bacterial organisms. Doxycycline is taken orally as a tablet or capsule and is available in 50mg and 100mg strengths.

How Does Doxycycline Work?

Doxycycline works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which prevents bacteria from growing and reproducing. It does this by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, blocking the attachment of transfer RNA (tRNA) to the ribosome and preventing the production of proteins that are essential for bacterial growth and survival. In the treatment of acne, Doxycycline works by reducing the levels of the bacteria Cutibacterium acnes on the skin, which is one of the key factors contributing to the development of acne. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce the redness and swelling associated with acne breakouts and other inflammatory conditions. For malaria prevention, Doxycycline works by inhibiting the growth of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in the body.

Warnings

  • Do not use Doxycycline if you are allergic to doxycycline, other tetracycline antibiotics, or any of its ingredients.
  • Doxycycline is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding as it can cause permanent discolouration of the teeth and affect bone development in the unborn baby or infant.
  • Do not use Doxycycline in children under 12 years of age as it can cause permanent discolouration of the teeth.
  • Doxycycline may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunbeds while taking Doxycycline and use a high-factor sunscreen.
  • Do not take Doxycycline with dairy products, antacids, iron supplements, or calcium supplements as these can reduce the absorption of the medication.
  • You must inform your doctor about any prescription medications you are taking before using Doxycycline, particularly blood thinners, antacids, retinoids, or other antibiotics.
  • Do not take Doxycycline at the same time as isotretinoin (Roaccutane) as this combination can increase the risk of increased pressure in the brain.
  • Always take Doxycycline with a full glass of water and remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking it to reduce the risk of oesophageal irritation.
  • Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
