Do I really need a flu vaccine every year?
Yes, and the reason is straightforward. The influenza virus changes from year to year, which means the vaccine is updated annually to match the strains most likely to be circulating in the coming winter. Immunity from a previous year’s vaccine does not carry over effectively to a new strain, so an annual jab is the only reliable way to stay protected. Even in years where the match between the vaccine and circulating strains is not perfect, vaccination still reduces the severity of illness and the risk of complications significantly.
Who is eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine?
The NHS offers a free flu vaccine each autumn to a number of groups considered at higher risk. These include adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women, children aged two to seventeen, people with certain long-term health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or a weakened immune system), unpaid carers, and frontline health and social care workers. Can I get a flu vaccine privately if I am not eligible on the NHS?
Yes. If you do not fall into an NHS-eligible group but would still like the protection a flu vaccine offers, you can have one privately at Oakwood Lane Pharmacy. Private flu vaccines are available throughout the flu season, subject to stock availability.
When is the best time to get my flu vaccine?
The best time to get vaccinated is in early autumn, ideally between September and November, before flu begins to circulate widely. This gives your immune system enough time to build protection before the peak of the flu season, which typically falls between December and March. That said, if you miss the early window, it is still worth getting vaccinated later in the season, as flu can circulate well into spring.
Are there any side effects from the flu vaccine?
The flu vaccine is very well tolerated by most people. The most common side effects are mild and include a sore or slightly swollen arm at the injection site, a low-grade temperature, fatigue, and mild aching. These usually resolve within a day or two. It is not possible to catch flu from the injected vaccine, as it does not contain a live virus. Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare. Is the flu vaccine suitable for everyone?
The injected flu vaccine is suitable for most people from the age of six months. If you are currently unwell with a fever, it is generally advisable to wait until you have recovered before having the vaccine.
