What causes earache in children?
The most common cause is a middle ear infection (otitis media), where fluid and bacteria build up behind the eardrum. Earache can also be caused by outer ear infections, a build-up of earwax, or discomfort referred from a sore throat or jaw. Our pharmacist will assess your child’s ears to identify the likely cause before recommending treatment.
Will my child need antibiotics?
Not always. Many ear infections in children are caused by viruses and will clear up on their own within a few days. Our pharmacist will assess whether antibiotics are clinically necessary. If they are, a prescription can be issued through Pharmacy First. If not, we will advise on pain relief and what to look out for in case symptoms worsen.
What can I do at home to help my child?
Age-appropriate pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help manage discomfort while the infection clears. A warm flannel held gently against the ear may also provide some relief. Avoid putting anything inside the ear, including cotton buds. Keeping your child’s head slightly elevated when resting can sometimes help reduce pressure.
When should I seek urgent help?
Most earaches in children are not serious, but you should seek prompt medical attention if your child develops a high fever, becomes very unwell, shows swelling or redness behind the ear, or if there is any discharge from the ear. If your child is under one year old and has earache, please contact your GP or call 111 rather than using Pharmacy First.
